Everything points to Square Enix preparing the return of its chocobos races – the fictional animals of the saga Final Fantasy– with a new game that seeks to emulate the success of Mario Kart or the recent remake Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled. Last December it was learned that the company registered Chocobo GP Y Chocobo Grand Prix in Japan, in both English and Japanese. Now Gematsu reports that On March 1, Chocobo GP in Europe, and on February 26 in Australia and Canada.
The most plausible theory is that it is a sequel to Chocobo Racing, a racing game released on PlayStation in 1999 It was compared to those other light-hearted driving titles, although its quality was inferior and did not receive as positive reviews as the competition. Its soundtrack collects music from the previous Final Fantasy and included many cameos of characters in the saga, but the recycling of content was punished – which sought to attract players only because of the popularity of Final Fantasy at that moment-, poor control, very simple tracks and unpolished graphics.
Square Enix already canceled a game for Nintendo 3DS
This will not be the first attempt to rescue Chocobo Racing, well at the E3 2010 Square Enix announcement Chocobo Racing 3D for Nintendo 3DS, but its creator confirmed the cancellation in 2013. Gematsu also speculates that it could be some event for Final Fantasy XIV or even the veteran Final Fantasy XI.
“I did the Chocobo Racing original. But the one on 3DS was run by someone else, and as far as I know, it has been canceled. If I had done it, I would have ensured its launch“said Takashi Tokita after years of no news about the progress of this portable version.
