Japan Studio is closing its doors and, as a consequence, many names have been setting foot outside these offices. Sony’s plans consist of “restructure” this development team to be absorbed by ASOBI, the team that handled the applause Astro’s Playroom for PS5. This week two new names have jumped ship: Shunsuke Saito, the character designer and animator of Gravity Rush and Gravity Rush 2; and Kentaro Motomura, who has worked on titles such as Bloodborne, Everybody’s Golf O Dark Cloud. They have both left Sony Interactive Entertainment Japan Studio.
Japan Studio dissolves in the middle of a restructuring
Sony confirmed at the end of February that I was “restructuring” the different divisions of the development team, creators also of titles such as The Last Guardian. The development team has slowly drifted off like a steady trickle, discovering that their annual contracts weren’t going to be renewed for the next business year.
This way, some members of Japan Studio staff will become part of ASOBI, while others have chosen to stay with the director of Silent Hill and Gravity Rush, Keiichiro Toyama, in his study Bokeh; a development team that recently shared the first art concept for their unique new horror game. Sony’s goal, for its part, is focus Japan Studio on ASOBI.
