If you have seen the series of The Witcher of Netflix in original version, you have probably been struck by the peculiar voice that uses Henry Cavill to play Geralt of Rivia, which closely resembles the one Doug Cockle used to portray this charismatic witch in the CD Projekt RED video games.
Now the popular actor who was known by many for playing Superman in The Man of Steel, has told a curious anecdote: The original idea of Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, the creator of the series, was for Cavill to speak in his normal voice. So why does he speak this way in the series?
A fortuitous accident
As the actor explained during the WitcherCon held yesterday, in one of the auditions he asked Hissrich if he should speak with a harsher voice, but the creative said no. However, when shooting a scene between Geralt and King Foltest in the third episode of the first season, Cavill completely forgot about this indication.
“I didn’t do it on purpose. It happened by accident“Explained the actor.” And just when I finished I thought, ‘My God, I’ve played the whole scene with the wrong voice.’ this way it would fit better with him and help him to give more nuance to some of his lines of dialogue.
“I know it’s very similar to Doug Cockle’s amazing work and that worried me. I don’t want it to look like I’m plagiarizing the extraordinary work of another professional. I think both interpretations are different enough. Obviously I was inspired by him, but I did it my way. “
In the end, Lauren let Cavill continue to play the witcher like this, and since they still had to re-shoot a lot of scenes, there wasn’t too much trouble making the appropriate changes to his voice.
